How is Cocaine Addiction Treated?

The addictive nature of cocaine makes it one of the most dangerous drugs to abuse. People take to cocaine abuse for a number of reasons, including biological factors and environment. Cocaine is difficult to give up because it stimulates the release of dopamine, the hormone associated with pleasure. It is this feeling of pleasure that addicts keep chasing.

Addiction to cocaine forces the brain to alter its working; this altered state manifests in how the brain takes decisions, overall behavior, and ability to remember things. Signs and symptoms that can give away a cocaine addict include unexplainable and severe weight loss, loss of appetite, aloofness, poor performance at work or school, restlessness when a high wears off, unkempt appearance and lack of hygiene, predilection to theft and other illegal activities to obtain the drug.

As of date, the FDA has not approved of any medications that can be used to treat cocaine addiction. However, treatment centers make effective use of behavioural therapy and medications to detox addicts and help with recovery. Disulfiram, which is prescribed to treat alcohol addiction, has shown promise in the treatment of cocaine addiction. Psychotherapy has shown the best results in treating cocaine addiction. One therapy modality uses a reward and prize technique to encourage addicts to persevere with treatment. Incentives can include passes to health food joints, and gym and library memberships.

Another behavioral therapy technique, known as cognitive behavioral therapy, focuses on preventing relapse by training recovering addicts to recognize triggers that may lead them to renew drug consumption. CBT is a useful technique to ensure that the addict continues to work on remaining sober.

If you’re aware of somebody needing treatment for cocaine addiction, then there are treatment options available. Support groups in your area can assign a sponsor who can guide the subject through the process of recovery.

Cocaine addiction treatment centers offer inpatient treatment; the stay in such clinics can be for a period of 1-12 months. Addiction professionals in these clinics are trained to help addicts get over the addiction they monitor the addict’s progress and educate him about the steps to take once the inpatient therapy period is over. Detoxification clinics are run by physicians who can help addicts navigate the period of withdrawal. The recovery process becomes that much easier once the phase of intense withdrawal is over.

Mental health professionals who have the necessary expertise in handling cocaine addiction cases can guide an addict in overcoming psychological issues that drive addictive behavior. Childhood trauma, addiction in the family, stress in the workplace, or a debilitating accident are some of the reasons for falling into the cocaine habit. Once these issues are addressed, the recovery process is greatly simplified.

Often, the initial guidance for deaddiction comes from the family doctor, who can educate an addict on the dangers of cocaine addiction, and direct the addict to a counselor or treatment center.
